Sunniside Conservation Area

Sunniside Conservation Area is the east side of the City Centre, roughly in a rectangle formed by Fawcett Street, Borough Road and the 1018 Ring Road. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is just within the boundary. Most of the pubs are actually wine/cocktail/sports bars. There are two real ale pubs, Barge & Barrel and William Jameson.

Barge & Barrel Barge & Barrel, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience

This pub has had several names, the most recent being Yates. Real ale was available until last year. It became the Barge & Barrel in Spring 2024 and real al was reinstated. The two photos, from Ron Lawson – Sunderland Antiquarians – below show the pub in previous incarnations

This pub was part of Binns Department Store and opened in 1997 as the city’s first Wetherspoons. . There is an history of the city depicted through paintings displayed throughout the pub :- The William Jameson – J D Wetherspoon

Burton House Burton House, Sunderland – CAMRA Experience

This large pub can be found on Borough Road about 5 minutes walk east of The Winter Gardens. A former Vaux pub- the sign is still there.

The remaining seven pubs are either wine bars/ cocktail bars/ sports bars or a combination of all three. There are two on Fawcett Street, the other five can be found on West Sunniside. They are ( with map references:-
