The original pub dates from about 1827 as a coaching inn. It was demolished in 1890 and rebuilt by 1894. (indicated by the builders stone above the door). In 1949 Robert Deuchar Ltd owned the pub and it then passed to Scottish and Newcastle Breweries. It is now a Mitchells & Butlers Toby Carvery. They no longer serve real ale. The pub car park incurs a charge which can be reimbursed if visiting the pub.
