Sunniside Conservation Area<\/strong> is the east side of the City Centre, roughly in a rectangle formed by Fawcett Street, Borough Road and the 1018 Ring Road. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is just within the boundary. Most of the pubs are actually wine\/cocktail\/sports bars. There are two real ale pubs, Barge & Barrel<\/strong> and William Jameson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pub has had several names, the most recent being Yates. Real ale was available until last year. It became the Barge & Barrel in Spring 2024 and real al was reinstated. The two photos, from Ron Lawson – Sunderland Antiquarians<\/em><\/strong> – below show the pub in previous incarnations <\/p>\n\n\n

This pub was part of Binns Department Store and opened in 1997 as the city’s first Wetherspoons. . There is an history of the city depicted through paintings displayed throughout the pub :- The William Jameson – J D Wetherspoon<\/a> <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This large pub can be found on Borough Road about 5 minutes walk east of The Winter Gardens. A former Vaux pub- the sign is still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remaining seven pubs are either wine bars\/ cocktail bars\/ sports bars or a combination of all three. There are two on Fawcett Street, the other five can be found on West Sunniside. They are ( with map references:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n
