It is one of six bars in Shields that have been called Mechanics&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 1900s it was owned by Westoe Breweries and was taken over by Bass Charrington in 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-custom-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Pubs-Heritage-01-Mechanics-03-Ron-Lawson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10246\" style=\"border-width:4px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 11 July 1974 and 7 October 1982 James Richard Briggs Dixon was the Licensee. Richard was a legendary character.&nbsp; He fixed a 50 pence coin on the floor and if you bent down to pick it up you were obliged to put 10 pence in the charity box!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early 2000s it changed its name to become Hanlon\u2019s Well. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full has-custom-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/southshieldslocalhistorygroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Pubs-Heritage-01-Mechanics-02-Hanlons-2000-Oct-12-Ron-Lawson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10247\" style=\"border-width:4px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has changed back to being called The Mechanics Arms now.
